ALPA Wants Stronger Drone Rules

The Airline Pilots Association (ALPA) says Canada’s new rules for drone operators address many issues but still don’t offer enough protection for commercial aircraft. Transport Canada released details of the new rules, which go into effect June 1, last week and they liberalize tough temporary regulations that are currently in effect while requiring registration of unmanned aircraft and certification of pilots. ALPA’s main concern is that the new rules reduce the buffer around airports  to three nm and helipads to one nm. “Permitting RPAS flights as close a distance as 3 nm from airports, and closer in some circumstances, is an unacceptable risk,” ALPA said in a news release. “The limit should be 5 nm from all places where commercial aircraft takeoff and land.” It didn’t say what extra safety the additional buffer would provide.

As I walked to the airport terminal with my friend Pati, after the first leg of a cross-country, she said she was going to check into commercial flights to get home. Pati was no shrinking violet. She was my very first passenger when I got my private pilot ticket and enthusiastically jumped in the back seat anytime I offered. The only sign of discomfort she ever showed in flight came from plowing into clouds.................more

Airport of the Week

Chibougamau/Chapais Airport ( CYMT) is located 19.8 km southwest of Chibougamau, Quebec  along Route 113.

Chibougamau is  located on Lake Gilman. It has a population of approximately 8000 people. Chibougamau is completely surrounded by, but not part of, the Municipality of Baie-James.

Chibougamau means "Gathering place" in Cree. The neighbouring Cree village of Oujé-Bougoumou has the same name with a more traditional Cree spelling.

Access to the town is by Route 167 from Lac Saint-Jean and by Route 113 from Lebel-sur-Quevillon. Chibougamau's airport is along Route 113, about halfway to Chapais.

The area has long been part of the Cree territory. French explorers and traders were the first enhabitants of the area, including Charles Albanel in 1671.

In the late19th Century the area attract the interest of mining prospectors. When gold was discovered in 1903, there were periods of intense exploration. No established development took place until 1949 when a multi-metallic mine was established in the area. A permanent community was established in 1952.The community started out as a company town but soon after, in 1954, it was incorporated as a municipality. There has been much mining activity in the area since then. Chibougamau is now also the centre of a large logging and sawmill industry.

From 1962 to 1988s, the RCAF operated CFS Chibougamau, a radar station in Chibougamau that was part of the Pinetree Line.

The city is also home to an annual "Folies frettes" festival ("Cold Follies") and a snowmobile rally.

The airport is serviced by Air Creebec Inc. It is a regional airline based in Val-d'Or, Quebec,  It operates scheduled and charter services to 16 destinations in Quebec and Ontario.
.

This airport is owned and operated by Transports Québec. It provides services for both passengers and freight.

Chibougamau/Chapais Airport has a 6495 x 150 lighted, paved runway (04/22).

Services include regular airline service as mentioned above, car rentals, Taxi Service and vending machines in the terminal building.

Both Jet A and 100LL fuels are available at the airport.
